Hyderabad Metro’s Historic Success: World in Shock

In a moment of international pride, the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) has received yet another prestigious recognition, with Harvard University publishing a research paper acknowledging it as one of the largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) metro rail projects in the world.

The case study, conducted by the Indian School of Business (ISB) and published by Harvard Business Publishing, highlights how the project was brought to life despite multiple challenges, under the leadership of Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy.

The ISB faculty explored the initiative under the theme, “Hyderabad Metro – From Concept to Execution: The World’s Largest Metro Rail Project under Public-Private Partnership.”

According to the research paper, Mr. Reddy proposed the metro rail project in 2006 to address the issues of urban transportation and adopted the PPP model to execute the world’s largest PPP metro rail project.

The project faced numerous difficulties, from the initial Maytas failure, public protests, disputes over land acquisition, religious and heritage concerns to unpredictable politics and financial constraints. Yet it soared through all challenges and emerged as a world class infrastructure project.

The research highlights the importance of the metro in Hyderabad’s transport ecosystem and how it has grown to become not just a major transport system, but also a global model for PPP-based infrastructure development.

The publication also applauded how the project created a lasting impact due to its advanced technology and smart financial strategies.

This research paper has also been previously published in the prestigious international management institutions such as Stanford, further cementing HMR’s place on the global map of urban innovation.
