Residents of Hyderabad are facing an unexpected problem as the city’s popular Irani chai and biryani are becoming difficult to find. A shortage of cooking gas has affected many food vendors, especially small stalls across the city.
The worst hit are roadside bandis located in busy IT corridors and residential areas. These vendors depend heavily on LPG cylinders for daily cooking. With limited gas supply available, many stalls are unable to operate as usual.
Over the past few years, many Hyderabadis developed the habit of having breakfast at bandis or small canteens. Quick meals such as idli, dosa and tea became part of the daily routine for office goers and residents.
Many households also rely on local curry points for daily meals. Instead of cooking at home, families often buy ready made curries from nearby outlets. This trend is especially common in areas around the IT corridor.
With the gas shortage affecting kitchens, regular customers are struggling to find their favourite foods. Many people say they miss their usual morning snacks and evening tea breaks at roadside stalls.
There is some relief during the Ramzan season because haleem is traditionally cooked on fire stoves. This means the preparation is less dependent on LPG cylinders and continues despite the shortage.
Some hotels and eateries are now switching to fire stoves or electric stoves to keep their kitchens running. However, restaurant owners say this solution may not be sustainable for a long period.
Authorities have stated that there is no major gas deficit in the city. Despite these assurances, the shortage has significantly affected small vendors who depend on daily gas supply to run their businesses.
For now, many Hyderabad residents continue to wait for the situation to improve. Until normal supply resumes, their favourite foods like idli, dosa, Irani chai and biryani remain difficult to find.
