Hyderabad’s IT Hub Crisis: Water Tanker Loot at Peaks

It seems like Hyderabad’s folks are paying a hefty price amid the rising water crisis in the city. Ask the people of Kondapur, Madhapur, and Gachibowli, and they will tell you about the increasing demand for private water tankers in the area.

With groundwater levels plummeting during summer, the only way is to depend on water tankers, which, unfortunately, has led to an increase in household expenses.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) already supplies water to several areas in the city through its water tankers. However, the demand has soared greatly over the months.

This has led private tanker owners to charge steep prices, especially in the western and central zones of the city. Here’s a look at the current water tanker rates:

25,000-litre tanker – 3,500–4,000
10,000-litre tanker – 1,500–2,000

Do you know what adds to the woes? Untimely deliveries! Residents across several areas of Hyderabad have reported that the tankers do not reach their homes on time, even after paying hefty prices for the water supply.

Currently, city-supplied water is available only for 3 to 4 hours a day instead of the usual 7 to 8 hours. This has led several families to spend up to 2,500–3,000 per week to fulfill their basic water needs.

Hyderabad has become one of the most heat-prone cities amid the Indian Meteorological Department’s warning about temperatures soaring in May and June 2025. Now, it’s yet to be seen what measures the government takes to fulfill the rising demand for water across the IT hub.
