India Overtakes Japan: Proud Moment or Shameful?

India’s lifestyle evolution is showing in some eye-opening numbers. From bustling metros to smaller towns, changing social habits, rising disposable incomes, and a shift in leisure culture are redefining how and what Indians consume.

The country’s expanding middle class and younger professionals are driving industries once considered niche. Alcohol, in particular, is seeing record growth.

According to a Times of India report, India recorded the highest alcohol consumption growth among major global markets in 2025. The country is expected to become the world’s fourth-largest alcohol market by 2027, overtaking Japan, and may even surpass Germany by 2033.

This transformation reflects not only rising income levels but also changing perceptions of drinking among urban millennials and Gen Z consumers. What was once seen as taboo is now viewed as a social activity and symbol of modern lifestyle.

However, this trend raises important questions. While it highlights India’s integration into global social patterns, it also brings attention to public health risks and the need for responsible consumption.

For beverage companies, the expanding market offers huge opportunities. For policymakers, it signals the need to balance economic gains with awareness campaigns about moderation and health.

India’s drinking culture, once confined to select circles, is now evolving reflecting a society that’s both modernising and facing new social challenges.
