India First: Groom Ditches Wedding for Nation

In a rare display of patriotism, a groom in Bihar postponed his wedding by over two hours to participate in a nationwide civil defence drill amid escalating India-Pakistan tensions.

Sushant Kushwaha, a resident of Purnia district, was set to depart for his bride’s home in Araria at 6 pm on May 7 but delayed the baraat to join the preparedness exercise.

The mock drills, part of Operation Abhyaas, were conducted across 244 districts and involved simulations of air raids, search-and-rescue operations, and emergency evacuations. Kushwaha said he had informed his family a day earlier about his decision to participate, emphasizing that national service takes priority.

“It is a proud moment that I could be part of the drill, especially when the Indian Army launched missile strikes on terror camps in Pakistan,” said Kushwaha. After completing the drill, he joined his wedding procession around 8 pm.

He likened his decision to that of soldiers who often leave important personal events for duty. “If the situation demands, we will also do that,” he added.

On the same night, India thwarted a major missile and drone attack from Pakistan on military sites across 15 cities. In retaliation, Indian forces neutralised air defence systems in Pakistan, including one in Lahore. Pakistan also escalated mortar and artillery fire along the Line of Control.

The civil defence exercises and military counterattacks come in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives on April 22.
