India’s Longest Sea Bridge: A Game-Changer in Travel!

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis recently embarked on a test drive of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) corridor, which achieved a major milestone with the completion of its entire deck work. The MTHL, constructed at a staggering cost of approximately 18,000 crore, will be capable of accommodating around 70,000 vehicles and stands as the longest sea bridge in India. The ambitious project is set to be finalized by November 2023.

Distinguishing itself from other sea bridges in the country, the MTHL will boast an innovative Open Road Tolling (ORT) system. This groundbreaking feature will allow commuters to smoothly traverse the toll booth at speeds of up to 100kmph, eliminating the need to halt and pay the toll charge. By incorporating this technology, the MTHL aims to facilitate a seamless and uninterrupted journey for motorists, cutting down the current travel time between Mumbai and the mainland to a mere 12 to 15 minutes. This significant reduction in travel duration is expected to revolutionize transportation in the region.

The project has received commendation from both the chief minister and the deputy chief minister. Shinde hailed the MTHL as a “game changer,” acknowledging its potential to bring about a transformative impact on the area. Fadnavis, on the other hand, praised the project as an “engineering marvel,” recognizing the remarkable feat accomplished by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the organization responsible for its construction.

The MTHL, also referred to as the Sewri-Nhava Sheva Trans Harbour Link, encompasses a 22-km long, six-lane expressway grade bridge. It comprises a 16.5 km long sea bridge and a 5.5 km viaduct situated on the land on either side. The combination of these impressive structures will ensure efficient connectivity between Mumbai and the mainland, contributing to enhanced mobility and fostering economic growth in the region.

With its completion drawing near, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link emerges as a remarkable infrastructure project, promising convenience, speed, and a new era of travel for commuters.
