Varun Gupta, a former Intel engineer and IIT graduate, has been sentenced to two years of probation along with a fine of $34,472, which amounts to around Rs 30 lakhs. He admitted to transferring thousands of confidential Intel documents to Microsoft to gain an advantage.
Gupta worked at Intel for a decade as a product marketing engineer before leaving in January 2020 to join Microsoft. Just before his departure, he copied sensitive material including a detailed presentation outlining Intel’s pricing strategies for a key client, information that could benefit competitors.
The Assistant U.S. Attorney described Gupta’s actions as intentional and repeated. He sought eight months in federal prison, claiming Gupta deliberately used confidential data for career gains. His lawyer, David Angeli, admitted the theft was a serious lapse in judgment but stressed that Gupta had already paid a heavy professional price, including settling a civil suit with Intel for $40,000.
The U.S. District Judge balanced the arguments and spared Gupta from jail but imposed a significant fine to reflect the gravity of his actions. Judge Baggio noted that this was not a one-time mistake and pointed out that Gupta’s damaged professional reputation served as another form of punishment.
After the case, Gupta left the semiconductor industry altogether. He relocated with his family to France, where he began studying vineyard management as part of a new career in viticulture. His goal is to become a technical director in the wine sector, marking a complete shift from technology to winemaking.
Gupta’s journey stands as a reminder of the risks of misusing corporate secrets. It also highlights how one can rebuild life and career even after legal setbacks and reputational damage, moving from microchips to grapes in search of a fresh beginning.
