
On the 4th of July, a huge part of Mumbai came to a standstill as millions gathered to welcome back the heroes who won the T20 World Cup in Barbados. The city was alive and the scenes, definitely never seen before. The spectacle brought back the memories of 2007, when a young team India paraded the same streets when India lifted the T20 World Cup for the first time.
The scenes from Mumbai shows how passionate the people are for cricket in this country. However, it also forces us to wonder how much can be achieved if the same number of people come out for a cause that can actually change their lives.
Mumbai is a city that sells struggle and suffering in the name of the spirit of Mumbai. Just imagine if this many people came out and demanded for better infrastructure and a decent living standard at par with other cities in the country.
Why can’t we see a similar crowd when there’s a cause that is affecting millions of people. Millions of students were affected in the paper leaks involving NEET and NET. What if the same crowd would’ve come up in support for the suffering students.
Scenes from yesterday proved that people can willingly ignore the sufferings of people from Manipur, Kashmir and Bengal because it’s not happening with them but something like a world cup can make them hit the streets even when it is dangerously crowded.
