NEET Pressure Turns Deadly: Body Chopped in Pieces

In a shocking incident, 19 year old BCom student Akshat Pratap Singh allegedly shot and killed his 49 year old father, Manvendra Singh, in Lucknow’s Aashiana area on February 20, 2026. The case has left residents disturbed and triggered nationwide concern.

Manvendra Singh, a pathology lab owner and former cop, was reportedly pressuring his son to clear the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, widely known as NEET. The exam is one of India’s toughest medical entrance tests and sees lakhs of aspirants every year.

According to reports, the father and son had a heated argument around 4.30 AM. During the altercation, Akshat allegedly used his father’s licensed rifle and fired at close range. Manvendra Singh died on the spot.

In a disturbing attempt to cover up the crime, the teenager allegedly dismembered the body. The torso was placed inside a blue drum. He also tried to burn the remaining body parts using kerosene before police intervened.

During interrogation, Akshat reportedly confessed to the crime. He told investigators that constant academic pressure and repeated arguments over exams pushed him to the extreme step. Police are continuing their investigation into the matter.

The case has once again highlighted the intense pressure faced by students preparing for competitive exams like NEET and JEE. Every year, millions compete for limited seats in medical and engineering colleges. The preparation process is often long and mentally exhausting.

A 2025 study found that 65 percent of NEET aspirants experience high anxiety. Around 42 percent show symptoms of depression while preparing for the exam. These numbers underline the emotional burden carried by many students.

Data from the National Crime Records Bureau shows a 65 percent rise in student suicides between 2013 and 2023. Most of these cases are reportedly linked to academic stress and parental expectations.

The incident has sparked debate on social media. Some users blame violent content, while others stress the need for counselling for both students and parents. Many believe open communication within families is crucial.

Akshat’s sister, a class 11 student, reportedly witnessed parts of the ordeal. The tragedy has deeply affected the family. As investigations continue, the case serves as a reminder that children should be allowed to explore alternative career paths without fear or pressure.
