Merit Loses, Money Wins in NEET

NEET candidates choosing NRI quota

More than 800 NEET candidates recently changed their status from Indian citizen to NRI during medical counselling. This move surprised many people and sparked discussion across the country. These students did not suddenly move abroad. They selected the NRI category to improve their chances of getting a medical seat.

NEET competition is extremely tough in the general category. Cut offs are high and seats are limited. In comparison, NRI quota seats have lower cut offs. However, the fees are much higher and only wealthy families can afford them.

This decision is not directly linked to problems in India’s education system or pressure from the government. It is more about using existing rules for personal benefit. The NRI quota already exists, and some candidates use it to reduce competition.

Still, this trend raises serious concerns. Many hardworking students with strong scores miss out on seats. It affects fairness and merit in admissions. The government should review NRI quota rules to prevent misuse and protect trust in medical education.
