A digitally manipulated video of India’s Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, has gone viral, falsely claiming that India lost six fighter jets and 250 soldiers in the recent Operation Sindoor. The clip, widely shared on social media, has been confirmed as a deepfake by fact-checking platform Alt News.
According to Alt News, the viral video was likely created using advanced AI-based voice and video manipulation. The fabricated clip makes it appear as though the Army Chief “admitted” to massive losses, but the original footage contains no such statement. Experts point out that the deepfake technology matched lip movements and voice patterns to insert false claims, making the hoax convincing to an unsuspecting audience.
The misinformation is particularly dangerous because it targets sensitive matters of national security. Analysts warn that such deepfakes can harm public trust, lower troop morale, and even affect diplomatic relations.
While the Indian Army has yet to issue an official statement, sources say cybercrime and intelligence units are tracking the origin of the manipulated video. Social media platforms are also under pressure to act swiftly against the spread of such content.
Alt News and other fact-checkers are urging citizens to verify content before sharing and to recognize the risks posed by AI-generated misinformation. As deepfake technology becomes more advanced, combating its misuse is becoming a critical challenge for governments, media, and the public alike.
