Pakistan Joining BRICS?

Pakistan is leaving no stones upturned in its attempt to get out of the bankruptcy it is currently facing.

In a new turn of events, Pakistan has applied for the membership of the intergovernmental organization BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).

Earlier this year, six new members were added to the organization, namely, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and UAE. They will formally join BRICS during the 2024 summit in Russia.

Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, foreign office spokesperson, said ‘Yes, I can confirm that Pakistan has made a formal request to join BRICS, which we believe is an important grouping of developing countries’.

Whatever Pakistan might say officially, the need to join BRICS arise due to its catastrophic economy and alienation by several nations on all the different platforms globally.

Many countries have refused to provide aid to Pakistan even though the former PM, Imran Khan, did his best to squeeze money out of his foreign visits.

The ground reality in Pakistan is even worse with skyrocketing inflation and lack of basic goods. China, Pakistan’s closest Ally among the BRICS nations, might help it to develop better relationships with the rest of the group. But, we would have to wait to see how India and Russia reacts.
