A tragic incident in Punganur has drawn attention to the deadly danger of carbon monoxide poisoning in closed spaces. Four members of a family, including two young twin girls, died after fumes from a motorbike engine filled a room while they were sleeping.
According to police reports, the incident took place on Sunday at the house of Murali, a local hair salon owner. Murali had recently taken his motorbike for repairs. After bringing it home, he reportedly followed a mechanic’s advice and left the bike engine running overnight to test it. The vehicle was parked inside the house, and the engine continued running for several hours.
Murali had closed the doors and windows of the room where his children and father were sleeping. Meanwhile, he and his wife slept on the terrace of the house. As the motorbike engine kept running through the night, it released Carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas that has no smell or color. Because the room was completely closed and had no ventilation, the gas slowly filled the space where the family members were sleeping.
The victims were eight-year-old twin sisters Charitha and Chandana, their 15-year-old brother Karthik, and their 70-year-old grandfather Ramachandraiah. Sadly, all four died in their sleep due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Their bodies were discovered the next morning.
Police have registered a case and shifted the bodies to a government hospital for postmortem examination. The incident has shocked people in the area and deeply saddened the local community.
Experts say carbon monoxide poisoning is extremely dangerous because the gas cannot be detected by smell or sight. It can quickly build up in closed spaces without people realizing the danger. When inhaled, it reduces the body’s ability to carry oxygen in the blood, which can lead to unconsciousness and death.
Safety experts warn that engines, generators, or any fuel-burning machines should never be run inside homes, garages, or other enclosed spaces. Proper ventilation is essential, and even a short exposure to carbon monoxide in a closed area can become fatal.
