Ritual Turns Violent: Groom Attacked Over Rs 5K

A wedding in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, turned ugly after a fight broke out over the traditional joota chupai ritual, where the bride’s family hides the groom’s shoes and demands money to return them.

What is usually a fun and light-hearted tradition ended in chaos when the groom, Muhammad Shabir from Uttarakhand, offered ₹5,000 while the bride’s side demanded ₹50,000.

Things took a bad turn when the bride’s relatives allegedly mocked Shabir, calling him a “beggar” for offering less money. A heated argument followed, and Shabir’s family claimed they were locked in a room and beaten with sticks.

They also said they were questioned about gold gifts. On the other hand, the bride’s family said the groom’s side cared more about money than emotions.

Guests tried to stop the fight, but it didn’t calm down until the police arrived. Najibabad police said that no legal complaint was filed and both sides reached a compromise.

The joota chupai ritual is meant to be fun and playful, but sometimes high expectations can turn it into a serious problem. In this case, the fight spoiled the mood of what should have been a happy event.

To avoid such issues, some communities have set limits. Clear rules like setting limits can help traditions stay enjoyable for everyone.
