The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government after his estranged wife Hasin Jahan filed a plea seeking an increase in her monthly alimony. Both Shami and the state have been given four weeks to submit their responses.
According to the Calcutta High Court’s earlier order, Hasin Jahan currently receives ₹1.5 lakh per month for herself and ₹2.5 lakh for their daughter. However, Jahan has told the Supreme Court that the total amount is insufficient to maintain their lifestyle and meet essential expenses.
This marks a new chapter in the long-running legal battle between Shami and Jahan, which began in 2018. Their marriage has been overshadowed by allegations of domestic violence and dowry harassment.
Despite the controversy, Shami, who represents Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL, has continued to perform consistently for India and maintain his focus on cricket.
In a past interview, when asked about his personal issues, Shami said he prefers not to dwell on the past. “I don’t regret anything. What’s gone is gone. I just focus on my cricket,” he stated.
Now that the Supreme Court has taken up the matter, the next hearing will take place after both parties file their replies. The decision could determine the next course of action in this long-pending case.
