Tech Salary Race: Why Hyderabad Still Behind Bengaluru?

India’s tech growth has not been limited to coding jobs or startup success stories. It is also shaped by geography, where opportunities concentrate and talent moves. Certain cities continue to emerge as strong economic hubs in the technology sector.

Salary trends often reflect these patterns more clearly than announcements or policies. They highlight where high value roles are based. These trends also show how different cities compare in terms of growth and earning potential.

A recent post by Indian Tech & Infra, citing Levels.fyi, has triggered discussion. It lists the average salaries of software engineers across major Indian cities for 2025. The data provides insight into the current tech salary landscape.

Bengaluru leads the chart with 33.65 LPA, followed by Hyderabad at 30.26 LPA. After these two cities, there is a noticeable drop in salaries. This difference has raised questions about the distribution of opportunities.

Delhi NCR stands at 21.38 LPA, while Pune is at 19.54 LPA. Mumbai and Chennai follow with 18.42 LPA and 18.29 LPA respectively. At the lower end, Kolkata and Ahmedabad report much lower average salaries.

The gap across cities highlights deeper structural differences. A few cities dominate high paying roles in product companies, startups, and global firms. Others remain strong in service roles but offer comparatively lower compensation.

This raises a larger question about India’s tech ecosystem. It suggests that opportunities may be concentrated in select cities rather than evenly spread. The salary gap reflects this imbalance clearly.

The data shows that the story is not just about numbers. It is about where opportunities are located. Understanding this concentration helps explain the direction of India’s evolving tech industry.
