Viral Video: Tourist Harassment @ Charminar Sparks Outrage

A disturbing video shared on social media has sparked outrage after a foreign woman was verbally harassed in Charminar market. The incident has raised serious concerns about public safety and behaviour in crowded tourist areas.

The video shows a group of men making vulgar remarks at the woman as she walked through the busy market in Hyderabad. Her husband recorded the incident and questioned the men over their comments.

The couple, reportedly tourists from New Zealand, were visiting the city when the harassment occurred. The woman was targeted simply for walking through the market with her partner.

After the clip went viral, many social media users expressed anger and shame. Several pointed out that some individuals misuse language barriers to harass women in public without fear of consequences.

Observers noted that such incidents are becoming increasingly common. Street harassment is being normalised, creating fear among tourists and discouraging them from freely exploring local culture.

Foreign women, in particular, have reported feeling unsafe while travelling in India. This contrasts sharply with the country’s long-held image of warmth and hospitality.

A 2025 report by Hindustan Times, based on the NARI 2025 index, surveyed 12,770 women across 31 cities. Over 40 percent of urban women said they fear for their safety due to harassment.

Experts say such incidents reflect deeper institutional and social failures. Without stronger awareness efforts and strict law enforcement, public harassment will continue to damage India’s global image.

Immediate action is needed to ensure safety and dignity for both locals and visitors. Respect in public spaces must not be optional.
