Abishek Porel returns to Bengal squad after bail
Abishek Porel has returned to Bengal’s squad just 10 days after being granted bail in an alleged rape and criminal intimidation case, with his selection for the upcoming practice matches attracting strong reactions from fans.
The 23 year old wicketkeeper batter was arrested in August after a medical student filed a complaint against him.
Abishek Porel was granted bail around September 18 after spending more than a month in judicial custody. The legal proceedings in the case are still ongoing.
Now, Abishek Porel has been included in Bengal’s squad for their practice matches against Assam in Guwahati ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season. The squad is scheduled to travel to Guwahati on September 30.
The selection has raised questions among cricket fans, with some describing Bengal’s decision as disgraceful given the timing of his return while the case remains ongoing.
Abishek Porel was previously left out of Bengal’s list of senior probables for the 2026-27 season after the case came to light. His inclusion in the practice match squad therefore comes as a notable change in the team’s approach.
The allegations against Abishek Porel relate to a complaint filed by a medical student.
She alleged that he had a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage and later accused him of sexual offences and intimidation. According to reports Porel has denied the allegations.
Abishek Porel has been an important player for Bengal in recent seasons and also represents Delhi Capitals in the IPL. He made his IPL debut in 2023 after joining DC as a replacement for Rishabh Pant.
For now, his return to the Bengal setup means he could be involved in cricket again ahead of the Ranji Trophy season.
Despite, the legal case against him is still pending, and the allegations have not been established by a court.
