Priority Pick? SRH Head Coach Gives Blunt Response

The Sunrisers Leeds franchise has responded to the controversy surrounding the signing of Pakistan spinner Abrar Ahmed in The Hundred men’s auction.

The decision triggered strong reactions on social media, especially among fans in India. The discussion grew because Sunrisers Leeds is owned by the Sun TV group, which also owns Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.

Addressing the issue, head coach Daniel Vettori explained that the selection was based purely on the team’s auction strategy.

According to Daniel Vettori, the franchise had initially targeted Adil Rashid as their first choice for the spin role.

However, Adil Rashid was picked early in the auction by Southern Brave. This forced Sunrisers Leeds to look for alternative overseas spin options.

Vettori said the team had a shortlist of several players. Abrar Ahmed was one of the spinners considered during that process.

He added that the management was pleased to secure the Pakistan leg spinner in the auction.

Daniel Vettori also clarified that the franchise never discussed avoiding players from Pakistan during the auction.

According to him, the only focus was on building the strongest possible squad for The Hundred tournament.

Vettori revealed that Abrar Ahmed was not the only spinner on their radar. Rishad Hossain from Bangladesh and Usman Tariq from Pakistan were also being evaluated by the team.

The coach also pointed out that Abrar Ahmed’s mystery spin could be effective at Headingley.

He explained that many players in the tournament may not have faced the bowler before. His variations could make him a strong wicket taking option in the powerplay and middle overs.

In the auction, Abrar Ahmed became the second Pakistan player to be picked. Usman Tariq was earlier signed by Birmingham Phoenix.

Despite the explanation from Sunrisers Leeds, the debate continues on social media.

Some fans believe the franchise should have handled the situation differently. Others say the decision should be seen purely as a cricketing choice.
