English Hypocrisy Exposed After Fight with Gambhir

Tensions flared at The Oval ahead of the Fifth Test between India and England when India head coach Gautam Gambhir entered into a heated confrontation with Surrey chief curator Lee Fortis. The clash erupted after Fortis reportedly instructed Gambhir and support staff to maintain a distance of 2.5 metres from the protected pitch area during a training session. Coaches Santanshu Kotak and captain Shubman Gill later confirmed that this restriction felt unprecedented and unnecessary.

Gambhir was seen pointing at Fortis and retorting: “You don’t tell us what to do… you’re just a groundsman.” The curator threatened to file a report, to which Gambhir shot back defiantly. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak intervened to defuse the situation.

Former Indian players and analysts took note on social media when an older image surfaced of Fortis standing directly on the pitch alongside England coach Brendon McCullum at The Oval during the 2023 Ashes, fueling accusations of double standards.

Shubman Gill, India’s Test captain, called the episode “surprising” and questioned why such rules were suddenly enforced. He emphasized that Indian players had used the pitch with rubber-soled shoes or barefoot in previous matches without any issue.

Despite public outrage, Kotak confirmed India would not lodge an official complaint. He pointed out that the pavilion felt the curator was “not the easiest person to work with” and that such over-protection of a playing surface felt unnecessary and patronizing.

This spat underscores broader tensions in the India-England Test series, now standing at 2–1 in England’s favor. With the decider at The Oval starting July 31, both teams head into the match amid simmering off-field drama and fierce rivalry.
