Gautam Gambhir has made it clear he stands firmly by Shubman Gill. The former India opener said he would take all the blame and pressure if needed, as long as Gill keeps doing the right things for the team.
Gambhir Praises Gill’s Calm Leadership
During the ongoing India vs West Indies Test in New Delhi, Gambhir praised Gill’s calmness and maturity since taking over as captain. He recalled their first conversation after Gill was appointed Test captain ahead of the England tour earlier this year.
Leading India Through Transition
India was in a major transition phase with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepping away from Test cricket. Despite the pressure, Gill led a young team in tough English conditions and managed to draw the series 2-2.
More Than Just Numbers
Gambhir said numbers don’t reveal everything. Even though Gill scored 754 runs in that series, including four centuries and a double hundred, it was his composure under pressure that impressed him most.
Gambhir’s Deep-Sea Analogy
“We threw him in a deep sea,” Gambhir said. “He could either drown or become a world-class swimmer.” He added that Gill’s ability to stay composed and carry the team reflected his strong character.
Gill’s Leadership Under Pressure
Gill’s performance in England wasn’t just about runs—it was about leadership. He stayed calm even during tight situations. Gambhir noted that throughout the intense two-month tour, Gill never showed frustration. Instead, he led with confidence and belief.
New Role, New Challenge
Now, Gill will lead India’s ODI team as well. The upcoming tour to Australia in October marks the start of his ODI captaincy. As Gambhir said, the long-term plan is to prepare him for the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa.
Gambhir Takes Responsibility
Gambhir said his role is to shield Gill from outside noise. “I’ll always back him and protect him. My job is to take pressure off him,” he said. “I’ll take all the blame as long as he stays honest and does the right thing for the team.”
The Real Test Ahead
Gambhir praised Gill’s discipline and work ethic, saying he has done everything right so far. But he added that true leadership is tested when things go wrong. “He hasn’t faced tough days yet. Those will come. What matters is how he responds then,” Gambhir said.
Strong Start Under Gambhir’s Guidance
Gill’s captaincy journey has begun well. With 966 Test runs this year and India close to sweeping the West Indies series, he seems to have found both confidence and clarity under Gambhir’s guidance.
