Sanjiv Goenka, owner of Lucknow Super Giants, has opened up about the business side of investing in the IPL. His comments have sparked fresh debate on whether the league is becoming more about money than cricket.
Responding to claims that his Rs. 7000 Crores investment was ego driven, Goenka dismissed the idea. He said such a large amount cannot be spent just to enhance personal image.
He said, “No. People might spend ₹5–10 crore for ego, but no one spends ₹7000 crore for that. For me, it was a serious business investment.”
Goenka explained that his decision was based on long term vision and belief in the IPL’s growth. He expressed confidence in the league’s strong commercial potential and expanding global reach.
His investment appears to have paid off. Lucknow Super Giants, bought for Rs. 7000 Cr, is now valued between Rs. 12k and Rs. 14k Crores.
Many have praised his business foresight and understanding of the cricket ecosystem. However, some fans have raised concerns about the league’s increasing focus on money.
Critics believe the IPL is slowly shifting towards a profit driven model. They feel that commercial interests are now taking priority over the spirit of the game.
The IPL was launched to bring excitement to cricket and expand its global appeal. While revenue was always part of the plan, it was not seen as the sole focus earlier.
Some fans now feel that financial aspects dominate the league. They argue that cricket is becoming secondary to branding, sponsorships, and business deals.
Despite these concerns, the IPL’s impact remains undeniable. It has elevated Indian cricket on the global stage and strengthened the BCCI’s position worldwide.
