Superstars Saving South Cinema This Summer: Next Peddi?

Since the beginning of this year, both the Kollywood and Mollywood film industries mostly depended on medium-budget films for box office survival. Big-budget releases were limited, and several major films struggled to generate strong theatrical footfalls during the early months.

However, the trend shifted significantly during the summer season as star-driven commercial entertainers started delivering massive collections once again. Both Tamil and Malayalam cinema industries are now witnessing strong box office momentum through big star-led projects.

Suriya’s Karuppu became the first major film to trigger this turnaround in Kollywood. At a time when even medium-budget films were struggling to attract audiences, Karuppu emerged as a major theatrical success for the Tamil industry.

According to trade reports, Karuppu has already crossed more than ₹250 crore worldwide. The film reportedly earned nearly ₹130 crore from Tamil Nadu alone, proving that the movie enjoyed exceptional support from audiences in its home state.

These numbers clearly show that Karuppu turned into a massive home-state blockbuster. More than half of the film’s overall collections reportedly came from Tamil Nadu, highlighting the continued box office strength of commercial entertainers led by major stars.

Meanwhile, the Malayalam film industry was enjoying critical and commercial success through medium-budget films created by fresh talent. However, there were also concerns within the industry regarding the inability of star-led films to generate extraordinary theatrical numbers.

That trend reportedly changed after Mohanlal returned with Drishyam 3. The highly anticipated sequel reportedly brought massive theatrical footfalls despite receiving mixed reactions from sections of the audience.

Some viewers felt Drishyam 3 did not fully meet the expectations created by the earlier films in the franchise. Because of the mixed word-of-mouth, several trade analysts initially predicted that the film could slow down quickly at the box office.

However, Mohanlal’s star power and the popularity of the Drishyam franchise reportedly helped the film maintain strong collections. Reports suggest that Drishyam 3 has already crossed ₹175 crore worldwide and emerged as one of the biggest films in Mohanlal’s career after L2: Empuraan and Thudarum.

The strong performance of Karuppu and Drishyam 3 in their respective industries has once again highlighted the value of well-packaged commercial entertainers featuring major stars. Despite the rise of content-driven medium-budget films, star power still appears to play a huge role in attracting theatrical audiences.

Attention is now shifting towards Peddi starring Ram Charan. The film is already carrying huge expectations, and many trade experts believe it could achieve at least ₹400 crore in overall business if the audience response turns positive.

As a result, all eyes are now on whether Peddi can meet the massive expectations surrounding it and deliver a major breakthrough success for the Telugu film industry during the ongoing summer season.
