India created history in Ahmedabad as they defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 final.
With this victory, India became the first team to win a T20 World Cup on home soil and also the first team to lift the trophy three times.
New Zealand won the toss at the Narendra Modi Stadium and decided to bowl first in the final.
India kept the same playing XI from the Super Eight, while New Zealand brought in fast bowler Jacob Duffy for spinner Cole McKenzie.
India got a dream start from openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Samson continued his strong form in the tournament, while Abhishek finally delivered in the biggest match.
The left hander attacked from the start and smashed a 50 in just 18 balls. India raced to 92 runs in the powerplay, putting huge pressure on New Zealand early in the game.
Abhishek was eventually dismissed in the seventh over by Rachin Ravindra after his explosive innings.
Ishan Kishan then came in and continued the aggressive batting. India crossed 100 runs in 7.2 overs, 150 in the 12th over, and 200 in the 15th over.
Sanju Samson looked set for a century but was dismissed for 89 runs, while Ishan Kishan scored a quick 54 runs. Captain Suryakumar Yadav could not contribute with the bat and was dismissed for a duck, but the team’s aggressive start had already set the platform.
In the final over, Shivam Dube smashed 24 runs, giving India a powerful finish. India ended their innings with a huge 255 for 5 in 20 overs.
Chasing 256 in a World Cup final was always going to be tough. New Zealand’s dangerous opener Finn Allen was dismissed early by Axar Patel in the third over. Soon after, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman also fell cheaply.
New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals as India’s bowlers kept the pressure on. One batter Tim Seifert tried to fight with a quick 52 off 26 balls, but the rest of the batting line up could not support him.
India’s bowling attack was led by Jasprit Bumrah, who once again showed why he is called “Jassi Boom.” He cleaned up the lower order and played a big role in finishing the match. New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 159 runs. Bumrah’s brilliant spell earned him the Player of the Match award in the final.
This win also carried a sense of history repeating itself in Ahmedabad. In 2023, India had suffered heartbreak in the ODI World Cup final at the same venue.
This time, the story changed completely as the Indian team dominated the final and lifted the trophy in front of the home crowd.
With this victory, India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, the first team to win the tournament back to back, and the only team to win the T20 World Cup three times.
