RCB face tough calls at 2028 IPL auction
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans waited 18 years to see their team win the IPL trophy.
The franchise finally ended that wait in 2025 and successfully defended its title in 2026. Despite keeping the same team together could become a major challenge after IPL 2027.
The next mega auction could force RCB to release some of the players who helped them win back to back titles.
According to reports, at least two top IPL players have reportedly asked their franchises for Rs 40 crore as a retention fee ahead of the next mega auction.
The report also suggests that the auction purse could increase to around Rs 150 crore, although this amount is not confirmed.
If these demands become common, RCB could face a difficult decision. Spending Rs 40 crore on one player would take up a significant part of the purse, making it harder to retain other important members of the squad.
RCB retained 17 players from their title winning squad ahead of IPL 2026. Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, Phil Salt, Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya are among the important players in the team. Venkatesh Iyer also joined the franchise at the 2026 mini auction.
Despite, the retention rules for the next mega auction are yet to be announced. If the BCCI limits the number of players franchises can retain, RCB might have to make some difficult choices. Other teams could also target their released players at the auction.
Mumbai Indians lost several important players after winning the 2020 IPL title. Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Trent Boult and Quinton de Kock were among those who moved away from the franchise during the 2022 mega auction.
Kolkata Knight Riders also had to make major changes after their 2024 title win. They lost captain Shreyas Iyer and Phil Salt ahead of the 2025 season, while Mitchell Starc also moved to another franchise.
RCB could face a similar situation after IPL 2027. Fans waited 18 years for this team to win a title, and now they have seen it win two in a row.
The next mega auction could mean saying goodbye to some of the players who made that success possible.
