Ishan or Pat: Who Will Lead SRH vs RCB Opener?

The IPL 2026 season is set to begin with a leadership change for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Ishan Kishan will lead the side in the opening match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Regular captain Pat Cummins is unlikely to feature in the initial matches due to an injury concern. He is expected to arrive in India on March 24, 2026.

Reports suggest that Cummins may regain match fitness by SRH’s third or fourth game. The team management is focusing on workload management instead of rushing his return.

The franchise has given captaincy responsibility to Ishan Kishan for the opener. He will also attend the captains meet, confirming his role as stand in skipper for the first match.

Kishan’s aggressive approach as a wicketkeeper batter could help SRH maintain a strong batting tempo. His leadership is expected to bring fresh energy to the squad.

However, Cummins’ absence will be felt in the bowling unit. His experience in handling pressure overs is a key factor that SRH will miss in the early games.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma has been named vice captain. This move reflects SRH’s long term plan to build a strong Indian leadership core.

The situation also highlights a broader trend in IPL 2026. Overseas players like Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are under fitness watch, keeping franchises cautious ahead of the season.
