Not a Coach: Kapil Dev Drops Bombshell on GG

Kapil’s comments come amid criticism of Gambhir following India’s 0-2 Test series loss to South Africa. Several questions have been raised about frequent player rotation and the use of part time bowling options.

Kapil Dev Questions the Meaning of Coach

Speaking at the Indian Chamber of Commerce’s ICC Centenary Session on Thursday, Kapil said the term “coach” is often misunderstood today. He felt the role no longer involves direct technical coaching at the highest level.

Gautam Gambhir as a Manager

Kapil said Gautam Gambhir cannot really be a coach in the traditional sense. According to him, Gambhir fits the role of a team manager rather than a technical coach.

International Players Do Not Need Coaching

Kapil explained that international cricketers already know their skills. He questioned how a head coach could technically coach a leg spinner or a wicketkeeper at that stage.

Focus on Managing Players

Instead of coaching techniques, Kapil stressed the importance of managing players and personalities. He said motivating players and building belief is the most critical part of the role.

Giving Confidence Is the Real Job

Kapil said the biggest responsibility of a coach or captain is to give confidence and comfort. He believes players perform better when they feel supported and encouraged.

Lessons From Kapil’s Captaincy

Reflecting on his own career, Kapil said he spent more time with players who were struggling. He felt successful players did not need extra attention.

Belief Drives Team Success

Kapil concluded by saying that building confidence in underperforming players is essential. According to him, keeping the team united is key to long-term success.
