In the 59th match of IPL 2026, Lucknow Super Giants defeated Chennai Super Kings by 7 wickets at the Ekana Stadium.
Mitchell Marsh played one of the best innings of the season and completely took the game away from CSK during the chase.
LSH won the toss and decided to Ball first. Batting first, Chennai Super Kings posted 187/5 in 20 overs. In reply, LSG chased down the target in just 16.4 overs with three wickets down. The defeat has now pushed CSK into a very difficult position in the playoff race.
The biggest talking point of the night was Mitchell Marsh’s brutal batting. Chasing 188, Marsh and Josh Inglis gave LSG a flying start. Marsh attacked from the very beginning and never allowed the CSK bowlers to settle.
The turning point came in the fifth over when Marsh smashed Anshul Kamboj for four consecutive sixes and a boundary, collecting 28 runs in the over. The over completely shifted momentum towards Lucknow.
Marsh reached his fifty in just 21 balls and continued his attack throughout the innings. He finally got run out after scoring a stunning 90 off just 39 balls, hitting 9 fours and 7 sixes. By the time he got out, the match was already almost over for CSK.
Josh Inglis supported him well with 36 runs off 32 balls, while Nicholas Pooran added 32 runs. Nicholas Pooran and Mukul Choudhary finished the chase comfortably for Lucknow.
For Chennai Super Kings, it was a nightmare night with the ball. Anshul Kamboj, who was earlier leading the Purple Cap race this season, had a very forgettable outing.
CSK bowlers failed badly in the key middle overs and had no answer to Marsh’s aggressive batting.
Questions will also be raised about team selection. Akeal Hosein had been taking wickets consistently, but CSK dropped him today.
Earlier in the first innings, young Kartik Sharma played an impressive knock for Chennai. He scored 71 runs off 42 balls with six fours and five sixes and kept CSK in the game. Shivam Dube also played a useful cameo of 32 not out from just 16 balls.
Despite, the total was never enough once Marsh started attacking. For Lucknow Super Giants, Akash Singh picked up three wickets, while Mohammed Shami and Shahbaz Ahmed took one wicket each.
This result could be a massive blow to Chennai Super Kings playoff hopes. LSG may already be out of the playoff race, but this win has made things extremely difficult for CSK.
They now need to win both of their remaining matches and also depend heavily on net run rate and other results.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s poor form is also becoming a major concern for the team. CSK have looked under pressure in crucial games and the batting has lacked consistency apart from a few individual performances.
