Messi’s Visit Hyped as Indian Football Suffocates?

Messi’s visit to India has sparked widespread discussion across the Indian sports community. Fans and critics alike have taken to social media to debate the positives and negatives of his high-profile arrival. The visit has generated attention, but also raised uncomfortable questions.

During his time in Hyderabad, Messi shared a message expressing gratitude towards Indian fans. He acknowledged the love received during the World Cup and said it was an honour to spend time in India with supporters.

While the gesture was warmly received, doubts remain about the visit’s long-term impact on Indian football. Many feel it was a missed chance to meaningfully connect Messi with grassroots players and local footballing talent.

Although the visit could have inspired young players, such moments were rarely seen. Messi was mostly surrounded by politicians and bureaucrats rather than emerging footballers who could have benefited directly from the experience.

Sunil Chhetri’s apparent reluctance to meet Messi reflected a deeper frustration. With the All India Football Federation facing one of its lowest phases, symbolic events are seen as offering little real progress.

The AIFF now has an opportunity to push for structural change. Using government support to strengthen football at the grassroots level could help Indian players earn global recognition in the future.

If developed properly, Indian footballers could one day visit Argentina, Brazil, and other football giants, with massive crowds cheering for them. Until then, high-profile visits risk remaining empty spectacles.
