India Captain’s Surprise Push Ahead of IPL 2026!

India’s Test schedule remains on hold until August, when the team tours Sri Lanka for a two-match series in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. With this long gap, Shubman Gill wants to ensure you see the side fully prepared for red ball cricket.

You are now likely to see several current India players return to domestic action in the upcoming Ranji Trophy round. Gill wants his regular Test players to play at least one proper red ball match before attention shifts to IPL 2026.

Ranji Games Central to Test Preparation

Ranji games are now central to Test preparation under the current leadership. You may have noticed that in recent seasons, players often skipped domestic matches to stay fresh for the league phase.

This time, the approach is different. Gill believes red ball readiness cannot be built in a hurry, especially when players move across formats and continents.

Scheduling Lessons from Recent Tests

Gill discussed this plan with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar before the ODI series against New Zealand. You are told all three agreed that Test preparation needs time, not shortcuts.

He pointed out that tight scheduling has hurt India in recent Test outings. The 0-2 defeat in South Africa showed how little adjustment time can impact performance.

ODI Bowling Focus Alongside Red Ball Goals

While Test preparation remains the priority, you can see the ODI setup being closely tracked. The management has flagged the lack of wickets in the middle overs, especially from seam bowlers.

Kuldeep Yadav continues to have backing despite a modest New Zealand series. At the same time, young pacers like Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna are set to get more opportunities alongside Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah.

Gill and Gambhir believe smarter use of this fast bowling group, especially in middle overs, will define India’s ODI success in the coming years.
