Ravichandran Ashwin Backs Naman Dhir
Ravichandran Ashwin believes India’s decision to pick Naman Dhir over Tamil Nadu Star Washington Sundar in white ball cricket was a complete masterstroke.
The former India spinner praised Naman Dhir’s performances in the recent West Indies series and explained why the all-rounder could be a useful option for the Indian team.
R Ashwin explained that India needed a player who could contribute with both bat and ball in white ball cricket. While he described Washington Sundar as a brilliant Test player who can also contribute in limited overs cricket, he felt Dhir was a good fit for the role India wanted to fill.
He added that the people responsible for selecting Dhir over Sundar deserved a huge round of applause.
The selection has become an interesting talking point ahead of India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand. Dhir has been included in India’s T20I and ODI squads, while Sundar has been selected for the Test series.
This gives Dhir an opportunity to establish himself in both white ball formats. His ability to contribute with the bat and bowl when required is what makes him an option for India’s team combination.
Washington Sundar, meanwhile, will be part of India’s plans for the longer format. His selection for the Test series also gives him a chance to contribute in conditions that will test India’s players in a different way.
India’s New Zealand tour begins with the first T20I in Christchurch on October 22. The five match T20I series will continue until November 1, followed by five ODIs from November 4 to November 15. The two Test series will begin in Wellington on November 19.
The tour will give Naman Dhir a chance to show whether he can carry his recent performances against the West Indies into another series.
New Zealand’s conditions can vary from venue to venue, making it important for India’s all-round options to adapt.
Ashwin has backed the selection call, but Dhir’s performances on the New Zealand tour will be important in showing how valuable he can be to India’s white ball plans.
