Virat Kohli had stepped away from Test cricket in May last year. This came at a time when India began transitioning towards younger players in the longest format.

India’s Recent Test Struggles

India’s Test team has gone through a difficult phase recently. The side lost home series against New Zealand in 2024 and South Africa in 2025. India also lost the Border Gavaskar Trophy after a decade.

World Test Championship Concerns

These setbacks have weakened India’s World Test Championship 2025–27 prospects. Many feel the team lacks an experienced batter who can absorb pressure, making Kohli’s absence more noticeable.

Robin Uthappa’s Message Sparks Debate

Robin Uthappa shared a post on X after watching Kohli train. He felt Kohli still looked mentally and physically ready for the Test format. His post quickly gained traction online.

Uthappa wrote, “Them eyes tell u a story…Surely it’s time to rescind his test retirement. Would love to see him back in Test cricket.” The statement added fuel to the ongoing discussion.

Strong Form in Limited Overs Cricket

Kohli has been in good form in ODIs. Playing for Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored 131 against Andhra and 77 against Gujarat.

Recent Performances for India

Before joining India’s camp, Kohli enjoyed a strong ODI series at home against South Africa. He scored two hundreds and a fifty, underlining his consistency in the format.

Focus on New Zealand ODI Series

Kohli is currently training with the Indian team in Vadodara. He is set to feature in the first ODI against New Zealand on January 11.

Impressive Record Against New Zealand

Kohli has an excellent ODI record against New Zealand. In 33 matches, he has scored 1,657 runs, including six centuries and nine half-centuries.

Closing in on a Major Milestone

Kohli is also nearing a significant career landmark. He needs just 25 more runs to complete 28,000 international runs.
