Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket after the Border Gavaskar Trophy brought an end to a defining phase in Indian cricket. The announcement surprised many fans and experts, given his stature and long association with the red ball format.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar reacted strongly to the decision. He questioned both the timing of the retirement and Kohli’s choice to continue playing one day internationals while stepping away from Test cricket.
Kohli ended his Test career with 9,230 runs from 123 matches at an average of 46.85. While the numbers reflect years of dominance, concerns had grown after his recent tour of Australia, where he struggled to make a major impact.
Speaking on Instagram, Manjrekar said he felt disappointed that Kohli did not try to resolve his Test batting issues before retiring. He noted that contemporaries like Joe Root, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson continue to strengthen their Test records.
Manjrekar also questioned Kohli’s decision to remain active in ODIs. He described one day cricket as the easiest format for an experienced top order batter. According to him, retiring from all formats would have felt more complete.
Virat Kohli’s Test career will be remembered for its intensity, leadership, and influence. However, the decision has sparked debate, especially as other modern greats continue to thrive in Test cricket. His absence in whites will be strongly felt.
