CSK Ready for Captaincy Change? Sanju Samson to Lead?

Chennai Super Kings have been asked to consider a change in captaincy before IPL 2027, with Sanju Samson being suggested as an option.

CSK have not made the playoffs for the last three seasons. Ruturaj Gaikwad has also faced backlash after a poor IPL 2026 season.

Gaikwad scored 337 runs at an average of 28.08 in IPL 2026. With Sanju Samson now part of the CSK squad, former India batter Sadagoppan Ramesh feels the franchise should consider him if they decide to change captains.

Sanju Samson should be considered as captain because he’s such a fantastic team player Ramesh said.

Samson has already led Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. He has captained 66 matches and won 33 of them.

Ramesh also pointed out that Samson has taken Rajasthan to an IPL final and another playoff appearance during his captaincy.

However, changing the captain will not solve all of CSK’s problems. The team also needs to improve its squad and overall performance.

Former CSK batter Subramaniam Badrinath had also backed the idea of removing Gaikwad from the captaincy.

Badrinath believes Gaikwad could perform better if he only focuses on his batting.

Once you remove him from captaincy, he’ll perform well as a batter Badrinath said.

The decision will now be with the CSK management. The franchise is also looking for a new head coach after Stephen Fleming stepped down.

There is also uncertainty over MS Dhoni’s future with CSK. If Gaikwad continues as captain, CSK will hope he can improve his batting and leadership in 2027. If the franchise decides to make a change, Samson could be one of the options.
