Debut Disaster? Gill Equals Kohli Unwanted Record!

Shubman Gill’s debut as India’s captain got off to a rough start in Perth. The young opener, leading for the first time in one-day cricket, joined Virat Kohli in an unwanted club — Indian captains who lost their first match in charge.

Poor Start in Perth

Gill managed only 10 runs in a rain-hit game that quickly went downhill. India’s top order collapsed, with Rohit Sharma (8), Gill (10), and Virat Kohli (0) all dismissed early. It was a tough outing for a captain looking to make an impact.

India’s Top Order Struggles

The combined 18 runs from India’s top three marked their lowest total in ODIs since 2019. For Gill, it was not the kind of start he hoped for as captain, especially when he was expected to lead both with the bat and in temperament.

Fans React on Social Media

Reactions poured in online soon after the loss. Fans questioned why Gill continues to falter at key moments despite his regular place in the side. Some compared his struggles with those of Rohit and Kohli, noting that while they returned after breaks, Gill has been consistently active but inconsistent under pressure.

Weak Record Outside Asia

Gill’s record outside Asia and Zimbabwe has come under fresh scrutiny. Many believe his overseas form hasn’t matched his domestic dominance, and the latest failure has only reignited that debate among followers and analysts alike.

Gill Reflects on the Loss

After the match, Gill called the experience humbling and educational. “When you lose three wickets in the powerplay, you’re just trying to play catch-up from there,” he said. Despite the modest total, he noted a few positives and promised that the young side would learn fast.

Chance to Bounce Back

Gill’s captaincy journey has just begun. With two ODIs and a T20 series still to go, he has time to regain control and prove his leadership. For now, that debut defeat remains a sharp reminder of how challenging leading from the front can be.
