Smriti’s Jersey in T20 WC: BCCI’s Actions Paying Off?

Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik expressed happiness after noticing fans wearing jerseys of women cricketers like Smriti Mandhana in the stands during the India vs Zimbabwe match of the T20 World Cup 2026.

Dinesh Karthik shared his thoughts on social media and said the sight made him proud, especially as it happened in Chennai. He highlighted how rapidly women’s cricket has grown and hoped the sport continues to reach greater heights.

He also thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India and its secretary Jay Shah for their consistent efforts in promoting women’s cricket. According to him, strong role models inspire young girls who may otherwise never get opportunities.

Many fans echoed Karthik’s views online. They recalled earlier times when supporters wore Virat Kohli jerseys even during women’s matches, showing how far the sport has progressed since then.

Observers noted that this moment unfolded at Chepauk, home ground of Chennai Super Kings. Despite CSK’s success in the IPL, the franchise has not yet entered the Women’s Premier League.

Some fans attributed this absence to outdated thinking by CSK chairman N. Srinivasan. They feel the franchise must evolve along with the changing landscape of Indian cricket.

Many believe the growing visibility of women’s cricket signals positive change. Supporters hope the momentum continues and the sport reaches even greater heights in the coming years.
