Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to Wait for Next Chance
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may have won the Player of the Series award in Zimbabwe, but Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that the 15 year old will have to wait for his next chance.
Sooryavanshi did not play a single game in India’s 3-0 T20I series win over Afghanistan. He had earlier scored 151 runs on the Zimbabwe tour while opening with Abhishek Sharma and was named Player of the Series.
Gambhir knows the talent Sooryavanshi has, but said Sanju Samson is ahead of him for now because of his performances over the years.
From Vaibhav’s point of view, it is again a very clear conversation that he has to wait for his opportunity. We know the kind of talent he has. We know what he can do, Gambhir said after the Afghanistan series.
Gambhir also said age does not matter when it comes to getting a place in the team. Whether a player is 15 or 30, he has to wait if another player has already done well for a longer period.
Samson also gave himself a boost with his performances against Afghanistan. After being dropped during the UK tour following three low scores, he hit two half centuries in the Afghanistan series.
Gambhir also admitted that dropping Samson from the England series was probably the toughest decision of his coaching career.
The India head coach also backed the players who were part of the team’s successful World Cup campaign. He said a few failures do not suddenly make good players bad.
For now, Samson and Abhishek are likely to continue getting chances, while Sooryavanshi will have to wait.
The 15 year old has already shown his ability in the chances he has received, but his next opportunity will depend on how things move ahead in the team.
