WC Winning Captain’s Career Flop? First India, Now Nowhere

Suryakumar Yadav Left Out Of Mumbai Ranji Squad

Suryakumar Yadav’s career has taken another unexpected turn. After being left out of all three of India’s squads, the former T20I captain has now been dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad despite making himself available for selection.

Suryakumar was not picked for Mumbai’s opening Ranji Trophy game against Chandigarh, adding another setback to a difficult phase in his career.

The 36 year old last played a competitive match in June during the Mumbai T20 League and has not played red ball cricket for around 18 months.

What makes the situation even more surprising is how quickly things have changed for the World Cup winning captain.

Suryakumar led India to the T20 World Cup title last year and was one of the key names in the team.

He was later removed as India’s T20I captain, with Shreyas Iyer taking over, before being left out of the national squad altogether.

Now, even Mumbai have decided to look beyond him for their opening Ranji Trophy game. According to reports, Suryakumar sent a message to the Mumbai selection committee, but the selectors still did not consider him.

Mumbai chief selector Ramesh Powar said the team wanted him to play a few red ball matches and get back into rhythm before returning to the side.

The latest setback leaves Suryakumar with another challenge to revive his career. A player who was leading India to a World Cup title not long ago is now fighting to get back into both the national setup and his domestic team. The next few months could be important in deciding where his career goes from here.
