Afghanistan needed a simple victory to qualify for the semifinals. On the other side, Bangladesh needed to win within 12.5 overs to qualify for the semifinals. Meanwhile, Australia needed Bangaldesh’s win after 13 overs to secure a semis berth.
Batting first, Afghanistan managed to score 115 on a tricky surface. Their fate depended on their bowlers and they rose to the occasion.
Led by skipper Rashid Khan, Afghan bowlers bundled Bangladesh for just 105 runs and won this low-scoring thriller. Rashid and Naveen-ul-Haq picked up two wickets each.
In the 2023 World Cup, Australia defeated Afghanistan in a group game and crushed the latter’s semifinal chances. In the final, it defeated India and broke a billion hearts.
Now, both India and Afghanistan took revenge against the mighty Aussies by kicking them out in the group stage and ending their dominance.
