A new experiment in cricket has sparked intense debate. Sports entrepreneur Gaurav Bahirvani has launched a hybrid format called Test 20. It blends the multi-innings structure of Test matches with the fast, action-packed nature of T20 cricket.
What Is Test 20?
In this new format, each team will play two innings of 20 overs each, making a total of 80 overs in the match. The idea, according to organisers, is to combine endurance with entertainment. But fans and players are already divided on its purpose.
Cricket Legends on the Advisory Board
An advisory panel of former cricketers has been formed to guide the format. The board includes AB De Villiers, Clive Lloyd, Matthew Hayden, and Harbhajan Singh — all seasoned names from different eras of international cricket.
Fans Call It a Confusing Mix
The public response, however, has been far from supportive. Many fans are calling Test 20 a “khichdi” version of cricket that serves no real purpose. They believe the game doesn’t need yet another format created purely for glamour and attention.
Why Fans See No Value
Cricket lovers argue that such forced experiments only confuse audiences. Instead of fusing two stable formats, they say attention should go toward reviving the ODI format, which is losing popularity and desperately needs structural innovation.
Need for Smarter Innovation
Even Sachin Tendulkar once stressed that ODIs need modern tweaks to stay relevant. Innovation, fans say, must serve the sport — not turn it into a spectacle. Many now hope that cricket boards focus on sustainable growth instead of cash-driven gimmicks.
