Virat, Rohit Sharma to Announce Retirement?

The below par performance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in Border-Gavaskar Trophy has led to rumours about their retirement from test cricket.

While Rohit Sharma’s retirement has been looming large, Virat Kohli too seems to be under pressure to bow down. Rohit was not part of the Sydney test and the team maintained he chose to take rest in the best interest of the team.

But there is criticism that Rohit is being pushed towards retirement. Prior to Sydney, Rohit played in three tests. His highest score was 31. He made two-digit score just once.

Neither did Rohit stick at the crease or go out and hit a big score. Though it is being said that Rohit has ‘sacrificed’ for the good of the team, it is clear he is under pressure from the management. Hence the Melbourne test is being considered his last by cricket lovers.

Meanwhile, another cricketer who is said to be on the threshold of announcing retirement is former skipper Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli too displayed poor performance during the Aussie tour. He made 181 runs in 8 innings and could not fill the gap due to the absence of Pujara and Rahane.

Already, both Virat and Rohit have said goodbye to short format matches following T20 World Cup. Now they appear to be in the process of opting out of Test format.

Once India returns from Australia, it will play T20 series and one day matches with England. Then comes the Champions Trophy in February 2025.

India is looking at winning Champions Trophy after 11 years under the guidance of Gautam Gambhir. If Virat and Rohit bow out of Test cricket, they can play Champions Trophy.

On the other hand, if they choose to say goodbye to international cricket, the situation will be different.

Now all eyes are on the management to see how the two players will be handled.
