Yashasvi Jaiswal is back in India’s ODI squad, but will he actually get a chance against West Indies? Aakash Chopra believes the young opener may have to wait again.
India will begin their three match ODI series against West Indies on September 27, with Shubman Gill leading the team.
Rohit Sharma has also returned to the ODI setup, leaving Jaiswal as the backup opening option.
Jaiswal has played only six ODIs so far, but his numbers have been impressive. He has scored 285 runs at an average of 71.25 and a strike rate of 97.60, including two centuries.
So, why is he still struggling to get into the playing XI? Aakash Chopra believes India need to give Rohit and Gill a long run as an opening pair, especially with the 2027 World Cup approaching. Giving Jaiswal a chance would mean changing the current combination.
How many white ball matches will Yashasvi Jaiswal get? He won’t get many opportunities. Although he seems like a tempting option, for him to be in the playing XI, Shubman Gill will have to play out of position, Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Aakash Chopra also pointed out that India do not have many ODIs before the 2027 World Cup, while Jaiswal is currently not part of the T20I setup either.
Jaiswal last played an ODI for India against Afghanistan, scoring 110 in the third match after being brought into the side because of Virat Kohli’s injury.
He was then left out of the ODI squad for the England series despite scoring his second ODI century. Now, with Rohit and Gill both available, Jaiswal faces the same question again.
India may want to keep him ready as a third opener, but how many chances can they actually give him if Rohit and Gill continue to open together?
