Dhanush is reportedly facing growing pressure after the poor theatrical performance of Kara, directed by Vignesh Raja. The film released on April 30 and opened to mixed reactions from audiences and critics.
Due to the mixed word of mouth, Kara is now struggling at the box office. Trade reports suggest that the film has still not crossed the ₹20 crore mark in Tamil Nadu.
According to industry estimates, the film was made on a budget of nearly ₹90 crore. Reports also claim that Dhanush’s remuneration alone was around ₹55 crore.
Several trade experts now predict that Kara may finish its theatrical run below ₹60 crore worldwide, making it a major loss venture for the production house.
The disappointing result has also triggered concern among Dhanush fans. Many supporters are now expressing frustration on social media and urging the actor to focus more on commercial mass entertainers alongside content-driven films.
Some fans believe that continuously choosing only content-oriented subjects could affect Dhanush’s market strength in Tamil cinema over time.
Amid this situation, attention has shifted towards Dhanush’s upcoming film tentatively titled D55. The film is being directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy and is expected to be a large-scale spy thriller.
The project features a strong cast including Mammootty, Sreeleela, and Sai Pallavi. Many trade analysts believe the film could help Dhanush bounce back after Kara.
Reports also suggest that music composer Sai Abhyankkar has already completed two songs for the film, including a peppy introduction track.
Sources indicate that shooting is expected to be completed by July. The makers are reportedly targeting a theatrical release before the end of this year.
At the same time, trade experts believe D55 must satisfy Dhanush’s fan base to become a major success. According to several social media discussions, fans now expect a more commercially engaging film from the actor.
The project is also considered important for Sreeleela’s Tamil cinema journey. Her earlier Tamil release Parasakthi reportedly failed at the box office, creating uncertainty around her market in Kollywood.
Industry observers often note that actresses from other industries rarely receive strong second opportunities in Tamil cinema after an unsuccessful debut. However, Sreeleela managed to secure a major role in Dhanush’s high-budget project.
Because of this, D55 is now seen as a crucial film for both Dhanush and Sreeleela. The final outcome will depend on whether the film can meet audience expectations and deliver the much-needed success both actors are looking for.
