Theatre Audience Rejected Dhanush…Can Netflix Save?

Kara starring Dhanush and directed by Vignesh Raja was released in theatres on April 30. The film received mixed responses from both audiences and critics after its release. Due to the divided word of mouth, Kara struggled at the box office and eventually ended up as a commercial failure.

Kara carried huge expectations among moviegoers because it marked the second directorial venture of Vignesh Raja after his successful debut film Por Thozhil. Many viewers expected the filmmaker to deliver another gripping thriller. However, the film reportedly failed to match those expectations and disappointed sections of the audience.

Following its theatrical run, Kara is now preparing for its OTT release. The film is scheduled to begin streaming on Netflix from May 28 after completing a four-week theatrical window. It will reportedly be available in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi languages.

Despite its poor theatrical performance, some viewers appreciated the film for its unique storyline and layered screenplay. A section of the audience also praised Dhanush’s acting performance and felt his role remained one of the major highlights of the film.

Some trade analysts have suggested that Kara may have suffered due to its release timing. According to industry discussions, the film arrived just four days before the Tamil Nadu state election results. After the unexpected political developments in the state, public attention reportedly shifted heavily towards political news and debates.

Because of this sudden shift in audience focus, Kara gradually lost momentum in theatres. Several trade followers believe the film might have performed better under different circumstances with a less crowded political atmosphere during release week.

Following the OTT release announcement, many social media users have now expressed hope that the film could find a stronger audience on streaming platforms. Some viewers believe Kara is not a typical commercial entertainer and may connect better with OTT audiences who prefer rooted thrillers with multiple twists and layered storytelling.

Since streaming platforms provide wider accessibility, there is growing expectation that Kara could receive a better response after its digital premiere. It now remains to be seen whether the film manages to attract its target audience and gain appreciation through its OTT release on May 28.
