Karthik Subbaraj’s Statement: Retro Hype Fizzles?

Following the terrible setback of Kanguva, Suriya is returning with Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, which is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on May 1st. With only a few days left for the release, the Retro team is currently promoting the movie by giving interviews to popular YouTube channels.

Recently, Karthik Subbaraj revealed in an interview that Retro will be a love story and not a mass gangster action drama. This movie will have a strong love angle for Suriya and Pooja Hegde.

Following this, some people on social media commented that they had expected a gangster drama from Karthik Subbaraj, and this update about a love story with Suriya was not what they anticipated.

At the same time, Telugu audiences shared mixed responses to the Retro trailer. Many Telugu viewers commented that the trailer was confusing and didn’t present an emotional hook to make them want to watch the movie.

For this, trade analysts commented that Karthik Subbaraj’s movies usually don’t perform well among Telugu audiences because he often treats movies in a more artistic way rather than as a commercial package.

However, Retro has generated good buzz among Telugu people due to Suriya’s involvement. Despite this, many Telugu audience members expected Retro to be a mass commercial gangster film, and Karthik Subbaraj’s confirmation that it will be a love story may dilute this hype.

Nevertheless, Retro has decent buzz among general audiences, and Kollywood audiences have huge expectations. It remains to be seen whether Retro satisfies these expectations, emerges as a blockbuster success, and helps Suriya make a strong comeback.
