Lokesh Kanagaraj Acting Debut Backfires? What a Disaster!

The Malayalam film Kattalan, directed by Paul George and starring Antony Varghese and Dushara Vijayan, released in theatres yesterday amid strong expectations. The film attracted significant attention before release because it was produced by Cube Entertainment following the success of Marco.

Rumours suggesting that Kattalan belonged to the Marco universe further increased curiosity among audiences. Many viewers expected another intense and stylish action entertainer from the production house. However, the film has now opened to largely disappointing reactions across social media platforms.

Several viewers who watched Kattalan described it as a routine gangster drama with excessive violence and familiar storytelling. According to audience reactions, the film fails to offer anything particularly fresh or engaging. Many social media users have posted negative reviews since the first day of release.

One of the biggest criticisms aimed at the film is its slow-paced screenplay. Viewers feel the narrative lacks momentum and becomes repetitive after a point. Some also claimed that the treatment of Kattalan resembles Marco too closely without bringing any new emotional depth.

Despite the criticism, many viewers appreciated Antony Varghese’s strong screen presence throughout the film. Audiences felt the actor managed to maintain intensity even when the screenplay struggled to impress. His performance is currently being considered one of the few positives from the film.

Kattalan also featured a surprise cameo appearance by director Lokesh Kanagaraj as a character named Leo Cabral. The cameo initially created excitement among fans online. However, many viewers believe the appearance could not significantly improve the overall impact of the film.

Following the poor response, the makers officially revealed Lokesh Kanagaraj’s cameo through a special promotional poster. The poster quickly went viral across social media platforms as the team attempted to attract more viewers to theatres. The move has generated mixed reactions online.

Trade observers are now closely monitoring the film’s box office performance in the coming days. With negative reviews dominating early discussions, Kattalan faces a difficult challenge commercially. It remains uncertain whether the film can recover strongly enough to reach the break-even mark.
