Mani Ratnam Obsession: Another Star Risking His Career?

Following the back to back commercial success of Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons, Suriya is currently awaiting the release of his next film Scene directed by Jithu Madhavan, which is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on November 6th.

Simultaneously, pre production work for his next film, tentatively titled Suriya 48 under the direction of TJ Gnanavel, has started and shooting will begin soon.

In this scenario, now there is strong speculation that popular director Mani Ratnam has recently approached Suriya to collaborate with him on a film. Furthermore, there is also information that Mani Ratnam had already narrated a story to Suriya 8 years ago and he is now making some modifications to the script to take it forward with him. If everything goes well, this project might take shape as Suriya’s 49th or 50th film.

In response to this speculation, while some Suriya fans have already started celebrating, suggesting that if this project materializes, it would be an iconic film in Suriya’s career and expecting it to be a romantic thriller, others are sharing negative reactions.

They feel Mani Ratnam is outdated, which was evident from the terrible failure of Thug Life. They also point out that he has lost his market hold and his audience base has faded. Despite these facts, many stars in Kollywood still want to collaborate with Mani Ratnam, viewing it as their lifetime ambition.

Additionally, they note that Suriya’s brother Karthi already faced a severe setback by collaborating with him on Kaatru Veliyidai. Hence, they suggest that not just Suriya, but all Tamil star actors should stop this fascination with working with Mani Ratnam, arguing that this is not the 90s and that he has lost his touch. Therefore, they feel Suriya should avoid working with Mani Ratnam and waste his time.
