Actor Jiiva’s Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimayil (TTT), directed by Nithish Sahadev, released in theatres on January 15 as a Pongal special. The film opened to largely positive responses from audiences and quickly gained attention during the festive weekend.
With Karthi’s Vaa Vaathiyaar and Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi receiving poor reviews, TTT benefited from limited competition. The film soon picked up strong momentum at the box office and emerged as the clear winner among the Pongal releases.
Reports suggest that TTT was made on a budget of around Rs 10 crores and has earned over Rs 40 crores worldwide. This performance has turned the film into a major commercial success for the makers.
After its successful theatrical run, TTT is now set to stream on Netflix. The film will premiere on the platform after a four week OTT window and will be available in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
Despite the strong box office run, a section of viewers feel the film is overrated. Some have described it as slow and boring in parts, questioning whether its success was driven more by lack of competition than content.
Critics also believe the film’s theatrical celebration was amplified because the other Pongal releases failed to impress. They feel OTT audiences may judge the film more strictly, which could impact its reception online.
At the same time, many viewers who missed the theatrical run are eagerly waiting for its OTT release. Whether TTT manages to impress digital audiences and repeat its success on OTT remains to be seen.
