In terms of production, Southeast Asia has always been a viable option due to lower production and labor costs. While China has historically been the central player, India is now emerging as a compelling alternative.
Previous reports suggested that Apple might target India for manufacturing its upcoming iPhone 17. This marks the first instance of Apple venturing outside China for production.
Apple is reevaluating its New Product Introduction (NPI) process, traditionally centered in Chinese manufacturing plants. Recent shifts involve producing 12-14 percent of iPhones in India, attributed to the iPhone 17’s simplified design, aiming to streamline development and reduce complications.
Actively diversifying its supply chain, Apple is significantly expanding production outside China. Over the next 4-5 years, the company aims to increase iPhone production in India more than five-fold to approximately $40 billion, surpassing the $7 billion mark in the last fiscal year.
This strategic move aligns with Apple’s goal of reducing dependency on Chinese manufacturing, potentially ending its monopoly in this realm.
