Air Canada Punishes Staff for Going on Strike?

Air Canada is preparing for major travel disruption as a strike by its flight attendants approaches. The airline has suspended staff travel privileges from August 13 to keep more seats available for paying passengers during the labour action.

Strike Set to Begin August 16

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, representing about 10,000 flight attendants at Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, has issued a 72-hour strike notice after contract talks failed. Key demands include higher wages and improved working conditions, with no settlement yet in sight.

Airline Reduces Operations in Advance

To limit chaos, Air Canada has started a phased wind down of flights, prioritising reductions on international routes. Passengers with unconfirmed tickets are urged not to come to airports. Refunds or rebookings are being offered, but alternative seats are scarce in peak travel season.

Canadians Abroad Could Be Stranded

Around 25,000 Canadians return home daily, and many could face long delays or risk being stranded. Regional partner flights by Jazz and PAL will continue, but these make up only a fraction of Air Canada’s total schedule.

Recovery Could Take a Week

The airline warns that even if a deal is reached quickly, it may take up to a week to restore normal operations. Until then, the majority of Air Canada’s network is expected to remain grounded, affecting thousands of travellers.
